Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for gunmen responsible for the brutal killing of a legal practitioner and two others in Egbebelu village, Ekwulobia, located in Orumba North Local Government Area. The tragic incident occurred shortly after the lawyer secured bail for a defendant in a murder case at High Court II, Ekwulobia.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident in a press release on Thursday in Awka. According to him, the victims were ambushed and attacked while returning from court. The assailants reportedly trailed the group before launching the deadly attack.
Lawyer, Two Others Ambushed After Court Session in Anambra
The victims included the lawyer and two individuals who had accompanied him. One of the victims miraculously survived the assault and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The survivor has since been debriefed by police investigators, providing vital information that is helping to drive the ongoing investigation.
Preliminary findings revealed that the attackers intercepted the group’s vehicle shortly after they left the courthouse. A red Toyota Camry, believed to belong to one of the deceased, was recovered from the crime scene by police operatives.
Anambra CP Orders Full-Scale Investigation and Deployment of Tactical Teams
Reacting to the gruesome attack, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, personally visited the scene along with senior officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), to assess the situation firsthand.
The Commissioner has ordered a comprehensive investigation and deployed both tactical and intelligence teams to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.
“We are committed to ensuring justice for the victims and their families. No effort will be spared in tracking down those behind this heinous act,” said CP Orutugu.
