Charlotte, NC – Embattled singer R. Kelly (Robert Sylvester Kelly) was urgently transferred to Duke University Hospital on June 13 following a near-fatal overdose while serving his 30-year sentence at a North Carolina federal prison.

According to court filings obtained by TMZ, Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, revealed that the “Ignition” hitmaker was placed in isolation on June 10, initially prescribed his regular anxiety medication. Prison staff then administered additional doses, causing Kelly to lose consciousness three days later.

“This was no mistake. It was a dose that jeopardized his life and could have ended it,” Brindley asserted, accusing officers of intentionally providing “an amount of medicine that could have killed him.”

After two days under medical observation, Kelly was returned to his cell on June 15. Brindley has filed an emergency motion demanding Kelly’s early release, marking his third attempt to secure the singer’s freedom.

Kelly, 58, was arrested in 2019 and in September 2022 was convicted in Chicago on six counts, including coercing minors into sexual activity and producing illicit recordings involving a minor. In February 2023, he received a 20-year sentence for sex crimes against children; an additional 10 years was later added under racketeering and sex trafficking charges, bringing his total prison term to three decades.
