A cyclist popularly known as ‘Okada’ tragically lost his life on Sunday after colliding with a moving truck near the popular ‘Radio’ bus stop along Kudirat Abiola Way and Obafemi Awolowo Way in Ikeja, Lagos State.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the cyclist crashed into a heavily loaded truck (registration number BDG 610 YA) while attempting to navigate towards the ‘Radio’ bus stop. Reports indicate that the cyclist, who was allegedly distracted by a phone conversation via an earpiece, lost control and struck his head violently on the pavement, resulting in instant death.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident in a statement, expressing condolences to the victim’s family and urging greater caution among road users.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the cyclist, while attempting a maneuver from Kudirat Abiola Way towards ‘Radio’ along Obafemi Awolowo Way, collided with the moving truck. He tragically lost control, struck his head on the pavement, and died instantly,” Bakare-Oki said.
Eyewitnesses corroborated that the cyclist appeared distracted at the time of the accident. Following the incident, the deceased’s body was handed over to the Police and transferred to the General Hospital Mortuary in Ikeja.
LASTMA Urges Cyclists to Exercise Greater Caution
In response to the accident, Bakare-Oki called on cyclists to prioritize their safety by remaining fully alert, avoiding distractions such as phone use, and never contesting the right of way with motorized vehicles.
“We earnestly urge all cyclists to prioritize their safety and that of fellow road users by remaining fully alert and suitably equipped at all times while on the road,” he added.
LASTMA operatives and officers from the Alausa Police Division quickly arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area, and worked to restore the free flow of traffic.

In a separate incident also reported in Lagos, an articulated truck plunged off a bridge in Agege, crashing onto two commercial buses. LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed that the truck driver, who lost control while navigating the bridge, sustained fractures in both arms.
Authorities continue to urge all road users — cyclists, motorists, and truck drivers — to maintain heightened awareness and caution to prevent further tragedies on Lagos roads.
