The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has assured the public of fairness in resolving the Ibom Air passenger-cabin crew altercation while cautioning that unruly behaviour will be addressed strictly within the provisions of Nigerian aviation law.
NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief following Monday’s viral incident involving passenger Comfort Emmanson and Ibom Air staff on a Uyo–Lagos flight.
“No matter the provocation, rest assured that you can always file your complaints with the NCAA, and it will be dealt with,” Achimugu said. “Self-help is not permissible in aviation anywhere. On our part, we will ensure fairness on every side.”
Details of the Ibom Air Altercation
According to Ibom Air, the incident began in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, when Emmanson was asked to switch off her mobile devices before takeoff. The airline alleged that she “bluntly refused” until the Pilot-in-Command made an announcement, after which a fellow passenger turned off the phone.
Upon arrival in Lagos, the situation escalated when Emmanson allegedly confronted the Purser who had given her the instruction. Ibom Air claimed she stepped on the crew member, forcibly tore off her wig, removed her glasses, threw them to the floor, and used her footwear to assault her. Security officials later intervened.
No-Fly Ban and Legal Action
Following the incident, Ibom Air placed a no-fly ban on Emmanson, and she was subsequently charged to court. Achimugu noted that such legal action “is not a crime” and explained that both parties may still decide to settle the matter amicably.
He, however, issued a strong warning to air travellers:
“Passengers must obey instructions from cabin crew members. Unruly behaviour in aviation has serious consequences and will not be tolerated.”
Similar NCAA Disciplinary Actions
The altercation comes just days after the NCAA imposed a six-month flight ban on Fuji music star Wasiu Ayinde (K1 De Ultimate) over reported unruly conduct at the Abuja airport.
The authority reiterated its commitment to aviation safety, passenger protection, and strict compliance with civil aviation regulations in Nigeria.
