The Imo State Government has officially banned graduation ceremonies and parties for Nursery and Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) students. This decision is aimed at reducing the financial pressure on parents and refocusing attention on academic priorities.
New Education Policy Announced
In a memo dated August 15, 2025, the Imo State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Bernard Ikegwuoha, communicated the new directive to parents, guardians, and school proprietors. Effective immediately, graduation ceremonies will now only be allowed for Primary 6 and Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) students, in line with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education structure.
“The Ministry is committed to delivering quality and functional education. Graduation parties for Kindergarten, Nursery, and JSS3 students are hereby abolished to ensure focus on meaningful academic milestones,” Prof. Ikegwuoha stated.
Ban on Frequent Textbook Changes in Private and Faith-Based Schools
The Commissioner also addressed concerns regarding the frequent change of textbooks, especially in private and faith-based schools. He emphasized that this practice imposes unnecessary financial burdens on families.
“All schools are directed to use government-approved textbooks for a minimum of four years,” he announced. “This policy encourages textbook reuse among siblings, reduces costs, and ensures consistency in the learning environment.”
