In a deeply moving and symbolic homecoming, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State led a high-profile thanksgiving service at The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Maboju Assembly, Lagos, marking a heartfelt return to the church where his spiritual and leadership journey began over three decades ago.
The service, held amidst an outpouring of joy and reverence, was attended by a distinguished array of government officials, private sector leaders, clergy, and well-wishers who joined the Governor in a powerful celebration of faith, destiny, and gratitude.
Reflecting on his return, Governor Eno described the moment as a “return to Bethel”, referencing the biblical Jacob’s homecoming in Genesis 35. “Thirty years after I left this church, it is emotional to be back. The Spirit of the Lord laid it heavily upon my heart to return to Bethel,” he said, recalling how he was healed of chronic illness at the church during a revival in 1975.
Governor Eno, who served in multiple church roles—including chorister, deacon, interpreter, and elder—recounted a prophetic message in 1980 during a youth prayer meeting that foretold his rise to governorship. Though he initially dismissed the prophecy, his mother’s unwavering faith planted seeds that would later blossom into a fulfilled destiny.
“Every vision is for an appointed time,” Governor Eno quoted his mother, reinforcing his belief that divine purpose and destiny unfold in God’s time. He also paid tribute to the church leaders who mentored him, including the late Apostle George Isong and Pastor James Okon, praising their role in shaping his spiritual and moral compass.
Emphasizing the value of unity and humility, the Governor declared, “God’s helpers may not be from your village, tribe, or even faith. Kindness transcends background.” He credited a diverse array of individuals—Christians, Muslims, and others—for supporting his journey to leadership.
The highlight of the event included the Governor’s announcement of empowerment initiatives and donations to the church and its members. He expressed his gratitude to friends and associates who also made generous contributions in support of the church’s mission.
Delivering the homily, Pastor Dr. Gabriel Uyeh, National Vice President of The Apostolic Church, praised Governor Eno for exemplifying “Greatness in Humility,” urging other leaders to emulate his down-to-earth spirit.
In a goodwill message, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, lauded Governor Eno’s moral upbringing and significant contributions to both Lagos and Akwa Ibom. “Your leadership is a reflection of your strong roots and godly values,” he stated.
The host Pastor, Dr. Solomon Nkopeti, described Governor Eno as a “true son of the Apostolic vision,” detailing his past service in numerous leadership roles within the church and affirming that his governance aligns with biblical principles from Proverbs 29:2—“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.”
Also in attendance were Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, who shared news of an international award received on the Governor’s behalf, and Obong Emem Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas). Other dignitaries included political leaders, National Assembly members, traditional rulers, and captains of industry.
This remarkable spiritual homecoming was not only a tribute to the Governor’s journey but also a reaffirmation of his lifelong commitment to humility, faith, and service to humanity.
