The Tinubu administration is set to roll out a mass electric vehicle (EV) transportation initiative in northeast Nigeria, following the final approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC). This ambitious project, valued at $100 million (N151.9 billion), aims to revolutionize public transport with eco-friendly electric buses and tricycles, alongside the development of EV charging infrastructure.
Mass EV Deployment: Contracts Approved for Buses, Tricycles & Charging Stations
Last week, FEC greenlit multiple contracts for the supply of electric vehicles and charging stations, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s clean energy transition. The approved contracts include:
- 10 Electric Buses: Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited will deliver 17-seater EV buses within six months for N2.9 billion.
- 10,000 Electric Tricycles:
- Mutual Commitment Company Limited will supply 4,000 e-tricycles for N49.6 billion within nine months.
- Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development will deliver 3,000 e-tricycles for N37.2 billion.
- Sinoma Investment International Limited will provide another 3,000 e-tricycles with similar passenger capacity.
- Each e-tricycle accommodates nine passengers plus a driver.
- 237 Electric Cars: Messrs. HNCEGC will supply:
- 100 BYD Dolphin EVs
- 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs
- 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs
- Total cost: N16.3 billion.
- EV Charging Infrastructure:
- KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited has been awarded N8.4 billion to establish EV charging points for the buses and tricycles.
North East Development Commission to Fund Project for Carbon Emission Reduction
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) will finance the project as part of its mission to reduce carbon emissions, boost energy efficiency, and modernize regional transport.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the EV procurement plan in October 2024, reinforcing his commitment to sustainable mobility and renewable energy adoption in Nigeria. During the approval process, Tinubu also inspected samples of electric vehicles, chargers, and batteries to ensure the feasibility of the initiative.
This project aligns with Nigeria’s broader energy transition goals, paving the way for a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable transport system in the northeast region.
