The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away recently in London.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The holiday is part of the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Tinubu, which began on Sunday, July 13.
A Tribute to National Service
According to Dr. Tunji-Ojo, the holiday serves as a national tribute to Buhari’s distinguished service, unwavering integrity, and commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Minister said.
He called on Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s leadership and values, and to use the day to promote peace, patriotism, and national unity, in alignment with the late President’s vision for a prosperous Nigeria.
National Mourning Continues
The Nigerian flag remains at half-mast across the country in observance of the official mourning period. The Federal Government also extended its heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul.
