The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially adopted Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University. This landmark decision elevates TASUED—Nigeria’s first specialized university of education—to federal status, strengthening teacher training and higher education in the country.
TASUED Becomes Ogun East’s First Federally Owned University
Founded in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED was named after Dr. Tai Solarin, a renowned educationist and activist, best known as the founder of Mayflower School, Ikenne. With its strong academic foundation and existing infrastructure, the university’s transition to a federal institution requires minimal federal investment.
By taking over TASUED, the Federal Government has established the first federally owned university in Ogun East Senatorial District, marking a significant milestone in the region’s educational development.
President Tinubu Approves TASUED’s Transition into a Federal University
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved TASUED’s transition on Friday, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for offering one of its top educational institutions for federal management.
“This is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the free education movement in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to shaping young minds and fostering leadership at Mayflower School, Ikenne,” President Tinubu stated.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a key role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment.
Strengthening Teacher Education in Nigeria
TASUED’s upgrade aligns with the Federal Government’s strategy to improve teacher education and enhance instructional quality nationwide. With this transition, TASUED joins the ranks of seven federal universities of education, including:
- Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri
- Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo
- Federal University of Education, Kano
- Federal University of Education, Zaria
- Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State
- Federal University of Education, Kontagora, Niger State
This move reaffirms the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and empowering future educators across Nigeria.
