In a swift political reaction, Dr. Ini Ememobong, Akwa Ibom’s Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, has resigned from Governor Umo Eno’s cabinet—just one hour after the governor officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Resignation Follows Governor’s Defection from PDP to APC
Dr. Ememobong submitted his resignation letter shortly after Governor Umo Eno announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during a public event at Government House in Uyo. The commissioner shared his resignation publicly on his verified Facebook page, making his stance clear.
“I Cannot Follow This Political Journey,” Ememobong Declares
Citing “politics with principles”, Ememobong explained that his decision not to join the ruling party stemmed from his ideological stance and continued opposition to the APC’s political platform.
“While I cannot question or fault the Governor’s personal decision, I am unable to join in that sojourn,” he stated. “My decision is borne out of my belief in politics with principles and my long-standing opposition to that political platform.”
Governor Eno Had Asked Opposing Cabinet Members to Resign
Governor Eno, while announcing his switch to the APC, instructed cabinet members unwilling to follow suit to step down. He made it clear that loyalty to his administration meant aligning politically with his new party.
“Prepare to resign the day I announce that I am moving… You can’t be in my cabinet and play anti-party. It is what it is,” the governor had warned.
Ememobong complied with this directive, becoming the first high-ranking official to exit the administration following the defection.
