The United Kingdom (UK) has expanded its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme to include visitors from over 50 additional countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, as part of efforts to enhance border security.
The system, which officially took effect on Wednesday, allows eligible travelers to enter the UK with pre-approved authorisation. According to AFP, the ETA costs £10 and permits stays of up to six months within a two-year period.
First introduced in 2023 with Qatar as the pilot country, the scheme was later extended to five Gulf nations. Now, it covers travelers from countries like Argentina, Brazil, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and several Caribbean territories.
Eligible travelers can apply through a mobile app, with applications for these new countries having opened last November. By April, the ETA scheme is expected to expand further, covering European Union nations and additional regions. Starting March 5, travelers from these areas will also be able to apply for ETAs.
The system applies to visitors transiting through the UK and even to children and infants. However, British and Irish citizens, residents, and passport holders from British overseas territories are exempt. The scheme also does not affect visa requirements for countries like China and South Africa, which already require a visa to enter the UK.
Despite its objectives, London’s Heathrow Airport has criticized the scheme, claiming it has led to a decline in transit passengers, making the UK “less competitive” and negatively impacting economic growth.
