Mia le Roux, South Africa’s representative at the Miss Universe 2023 pageant, has officially withdrawn just days before the grand finale in Mexico. The Miss South Africa organisation cited health concerns as the reason behind this unexpected decision.
Le Roux, 28, made history in August as the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa. Her groundbreaking achievement was celebrated across the nation, though it came amid controversy following the withdrawal of contestant Chidimma Adetshina, who faced online criticism for her Nigerian roots. Adetshina later won the Miss Universe Nigeria title and is competing in the Miss Universe finals in Mexico.
Having spent weeks in Mexico preparing for the global stage, Le Roux announced her withdrawal with a heartfelt statement emphasizing the importance of her well-being.
“Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me,” she shared. “However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”
Although details about her health condition remain private, the Miss South Africa organisation extended their full support, affirming her health as their top priority.
“Ms Le Roux has shown incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period. Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery,” they stated.
Le Roux’s departure leaves a significant void for South Africa at the 73rd Miss Universe competition, where she was among 120 contestants vying for the coveted crown.
Despite this setback, Le Roux’s journey remains a source of inspiration. Diagnosed with profound hearing loss at age one, she faced immense challenges, including two years of speech therapy before speaking her first words. Aided by a cochlear implant, she overcame barriers to become a symbol of resilience and determination.
