The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following his successful screening during Thursday’s plenary session.
Prof. Amupitan, a renowned Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Kogi State in the North Central region, succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman for a decade.
Until his appointment, Amupitan was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.
In his remarks before the Senate, the newly confirmed INEC Chairman pledged to leverage emerging technologies, including the use of drones for election monitoring, to enhance transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process.
He also promised to collaborate closely with key government agencies, such as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), to strengthen voter verification and reduce electoral malpractices.
Prof. Amupitan’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era for INEC as Nigeria prepares for future general elections under a renewed focus on innovation, security, and voter confidence.
