In a tragic turn of events, unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted and murdered a retired Permanent Secretary from Gombe State, Atiku Mu’azu. The incident occurred while the victim was enjoying his retirement in Kano State.
Victim Profile and Circumstances of Abduction
Atiku Mu’azu, a former Chairman of the Gombe State Board of Internal Revenue Service, was residing at Kabuga/Jan Bulo Estate along Gwarzo Road in Kano. Reports indicate that he received a phone call from his mechanic, claiming his stolen vehicle had been found. The mechanic instructed him to meet at an undisclosed location to recover the car.
Upon arrival, Atiku was ambushed and held hostage. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N20 million but eventually settled for N10 million, which the family managed to raise and deliver. Despite this, the kidnappers killed the victim and left his body on a roadside in a different location.
Investigation and Arrest
A source confirmed that one suspect has been arrested, but the mechanic, suspected to be complicit in the crime, is currently on the run. The Kano State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
Governor’s Reaction
Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya expressed shock and sadness over the murder. In a condolence message issued by the Director-General, Press Affairs at the Gombe Government House, the governor condemned the killing and commended the security agencies for apprehending a suspect. He called for a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.
“On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the deceased, as well as the people of Kalishen in Shongom Local Government Area,” the governor stated.
