President Bola Tinubu is set to depart Abuja for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, November 17, 2024, to participate in the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit. The high-profile event will take place from Monday, November 18, to Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
Invitation by Brazil’s President Lula da Silva
Tinubu’s participation follows an invitation from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who currently chairs the G20. The summit will convene leaders from the world’s 20 largest economies, including the European Union, the African Union, and key multilateral financial institutions.
Focus on Global Challenges: G20 2024 Theme
This year’s summit, themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will focus on critical global issues, including:
- Hunger and poverty eradication
- Reform of global governance institutions
- Sustainable development and energy transition
Nigeria, a strong advocate for global institutional reforms, continues to push for permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council, showcasing its leadership credentials on the global stage.
Bilateral Meetings to Drive Nigerian Reforms
On the sidelines of the summit, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings aimed at advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic agenda and strengthening international partnerships.

A Record of Active Global Engagement
This visit marks Tinubu’s first trip to Brazil as President and his 31st international engagement since taking office 17 months ago. Over this period, he has spent 125 days abroad, visited 16 countries, and logged over 267 flight hours.
Countries visited by Tinubu include:
- Equatorial Guinea, United Kingdom (4 times), Guinea-Bissau (twice), Kenya, Benin Republic, Netherlands, South Africa, Ghana, India, United Arab Emirates, United States, Saudi Arabia (twice), Germany, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Qatar.
President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the summit on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
