In a pivotal meeting held on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering peace, justice, and sustainable development in Ogoniland. Addressing a delegation of Ogoni leaders, the President emphasized unity and reconciliation as essential steps toward resolving the region’s historical grievances and challenges.
A Call for Unity and Reconciliation
President Tinubu urged the Ogoni people to move beyond past grievances, underscoring the importance of collaboration in achieving progress and environmental restoration.
“We cannot rewrite history, but we can correct the anomalies of the past. Anger will not heal wounds, but unity and understanding will,” the President stated passionately.
Inclusive Negotiations for Lasting Peace
To ensure inclusive dialogue, President Tinubu directed the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to lead the negotiations, urging cooperation among all stakeholders, including ministers, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and the Rivers State Government.
He emphasized the need for mutual trust and consultation, saying:
“Go back home, do more consultations, and embrace others. Together, we can bring peace, development, and a clean environment back to Ogoniland.”

The President acknowledged the historical significance of the meeting, reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the Ogoni people and their shared history of resisting military dictatorship. Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State expressed gratitude for the President’s unwavering support and stressed the importance of resuming oil operations in Ogoniland.
“This meeting solidifies our respect and commitment to the President’s vision. We will adhere to his directives and ensure consultations continue with a clear timeline,” Governor Fubara pledged.

The delegation, comprising over 50 representatives of Ogoni society, showcased the region’s diversity and readiness to engage constructively. Speaking on behalf of the Ogoni leadership, King Festus Babari Bagia Gberesaako XIII, the Gberemene of Gokana Kingdom, expressed the leaders’ commitment to finding sustainable solutions for the community.
