President Bola Tinubu Congratulates Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Re-Election as WTO Director-General

President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, on her unanimous re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a globally renowned development economist and finance expert, made history in 2021 as the first African and the first woman to lead the 164-member WTO. Her current term as the WTO’s seventh Director-General concludes on August 31, 2025, with her second term set to commence on September 1.

President Tinubu lauded her unanimous re-election, emphasizing that it reflects the global community’s trust in her leadership and vision for advancing multilateral trade to drive sustainable global development.

Expressing confidence in Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s continued impact, the President highlighted her ability to fortify the WTO’s role as a cornerstone of inclusive economic growth and good governance.

As a committed supporter of the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Nigeria remains dedicated to promoting a fair, inclusive, and equitable global trade system.
