Governors elected under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform are set to convene in Jos, Plateau State, on Saturday to deliberate on the future of the party’s Acting National Chairman, Iliya Damagum. The outcome will influence the party’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for November 28.
Divided Governors’ Forum
The meeting, called by Senator Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, aims to determine the leadership’s direction amid divisions among the governors.

The PDP faces challenges in securing consensus for a new national chairman, particularly from the North-Central zone. While Senator David Mark was considered, health concerns reportedly ruled him out.
Despite the leadership tussle, Damagum appears to have garnered significant support. Sources reveal 29 state party chairmen, along with the Federal Capital Territory chairman, back his continued tenure.
NEC Meeting and Leadership Reforms
The NEC meeting on November 28 is anticipated to finalize leadership decisions, but sources suggest replacing Damagum may not be on the agenda.
Meanwhile, the National Working Committee (NWC) has released a timetable for six zonal congresses, likely to influence future leadership dynamics.
Calls for Party Unity and Reforms
During a separate meeting, PDP senators emphasized the importance of unity and focus within the party. Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) called for efforts to rebuild the party’s structure and prepare for future electoral challenges.
“The PDP is not just about Damagum or Wike; the PDP is about its members,” Moro said, urging reforms in the electoral process following recent gubernatorial losses.
Suspension Controversy in Cross River
The PDP NWC dismissed the reported suspension of Cross River State Chairman Venatius Ikem as invalid, citing non-compliance with the party’s constitution. The NWC reaffirmed Ikem’s leadership, urging members to disregard the suspension.
