At least 32 cows were reportedly killed by a lightning strike during a heavy downpour in Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta, located in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
According to Wasiu Afolabi, the Baale of Osara, the tragic incident occurred around 2:00 p.m., shortly after a torrential rain began at noon. The Fulani herders responsible for the cattle reportedly discovered the mass deaths and immediately informed local authorities.
Local Authorities Confirm Incident
Speaking with journalists on Sunday, Afolabi stated that the incident was promptly reported to both the Aregbe Police Division and Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo, Chairman of the Odeda Local Government Area.
“I visited the site where the cows are usually kept before grazing and witnessed the devastating scene,” Afolabi said. “We have called for a meeting with the Fulani community to discuss the next steps and ensure the event does not disrupt communal peace.”
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, also confirmed the incident via a WhatsApp message to reporters. He said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Aregbe Division led a response team to the scene following the report at approximately 1:30 p.m.
“It’s true. The lightning struck and killed 32 cows during the thunderstorm,” Ogunlowo said.
Community Efforts to Maintain Peace
While the event has caused significant losses to the Fulani herders, community leaders are working to prevent tensions and maintain the peaceful coexistence of residents and pastoralists in the area. Meetings have been scheduled to address compensation concerns and avoid further escalation.
The incident has sparked public interest and concern, as similar cases of lightning-related livestock deaths have been reported in different parts of Nigeria in the past, particularly during the rainy season.
