Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has addressed public concerns following a viral video showing individuals destroying sachet water packs in factories and on buses. The video sparked widespread speculation, with some suggesting the individuals involved were officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
In his clarification, Wahab emphasized that he never accused NAFDAC of any wrongdoing. His statement followed NAFDAC’s public denial of involvement, where the agency clarified that the actions shown in the video did not align with its standard operating procedures (SOP).
Wahab had initially stated that preliminary investigations suggested the individuals were regulatory officers targeting non-compliant sachet water producers to safeguard public health. However, in a rebuttal on its X handle, NAFDAC reiterated that it does not employ such enforcement methods.
The issue gained further traction when an X user, Weyimi Lube, criticized Wahab for allegedly commenting without verifying all facts, highlighting potential miscommunication.
In response on Monday, Wahab clarified his position:
“A video showing individuals harassing pure water sellers was brought to my attention. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that these individuals were not affiliated with any Lagos State government agency. Based on initial information, it was believed they might be linked to @NafdacAgency.
“That said, our press statement did not accuse NAFDAC of any wrongdoing. In fact, we specifically commended their efforts in safeguarding public health and safety. Any suggestion otherwise misrepresents the intent of the statement.”
Wahab also addressed circulating rumors about a possible ban on sachet water in Lagos, assuring residents that the state government has no plans to prohibit its production or sale.
He urged the public to rely on verified facts and avoid spreading misinformation:
“While there was a minor miscommunication, it does not negate the accuracy of our press release or our commitment to addressing the issue transparently. We encourage everyone to focus on verified facts and avoid amplifying inaccuracies.”
The commissioner reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s dedication to clear communication and the public’s welfare, urging residents to avoid unnecessary panic and trust credible sources for information.
