The Ondo State Government has announced that individuals convicted of kidnapping within the state will now face the death penalty by hanging. This is part of intensified efforts to tackle rising insecurity and criminal activities.
Speaking at a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting held on Saturday in Akure, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kayode Ajulo (SAN), revealed that the existing anti-kidnapping law would be amended by the Ondo State House of Assembly to reflect the new punishment.
Kidnappers to Face Execution, Properties to Be Demolished
Ajulo emphasized that any building or property used in connection with kidnapping activities will be demolished after undergoing due legal process in court.
“The new law will recommend death by hanging for anyone found guilty of kidnapping. We are committed to enforcing the law and ensuring justice is served,” Ajulo stated.
He added that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, a staunch advocate for the rule of law, is determined to ensure that all legal actions against criminals follow due process, unlike in some other states.
Ajulo stressed the importance of law and order, especially as Ondo State attracts local and foreign investors, assuring the public that adequate steps are being taken to ensure the safety of lives and property.
Ondo State to Crack Down on Cultism
The State Executive Council also discussed strategies to address the growing menace of cultism in the state. Ajulo reaffirmed that the government is prepared to take decisive action to curb this threat and restore peace in affected communities.
Ondo Approves Massive Infrastructure Projects
Also speaking at the briefing, the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, announced several approved development projects, including:
- Installation of 6,000 solar-powered streetlights across the three senatorial districts of the state
- Construction of a 24.75km dual carriageway from Okitipupa to Igbokoda Jetty
- Construction of a 6.7km dual carriageway from Supare Junction through Akungba to Ikare Road in Akoko
These projects are part of the state government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and urban development.
Olu of Okeigbo Selection Approved
In a related development, the Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Bola Taiwo, confirmed that the State Executive Council has approved the selection process for the Olu of Okeigbo, to be conducted by warrant chiefs in accordance with traditional customs.
