HYPREP Showcases Ogoni Mangrove Restoration Achievements at Global Conference

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has highlighted its successes in mangrove restoration efforts in Ogoniland to an international audience.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday, December 13, 2024, HYPREP Project Coordinator Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey shared insights from the recently concluded 1st International Conference on Mangrove Restoration and Conservation, held in Abu Dhabi from December 10 to 12.

The global conference brought together mangrove experts, researchers, and policymakers to exchange innovative ideas and strategies for enhancing mangrove ecosystem services.

Consolidating Gains in Mangrove Restoration

Prof. Zabbey outlined HYPREP’s next steps in building on the immediate and long-term benefits of its mangrove restoration projects:

  • Restoring the West African bloody cockle: A vital species for local biodiversity and livelihoods.
  • Eliminating single-use plastic bags: Transitioning to eco-friendly alternatives for cultivating mangrove seedlings.
  • Enhancing shoreline elevation: To improve coastal resilience and protect local ecosystems.

Advanced Monitoring and Carbon Stock Assessment

The coordinator also highlighted the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for monitoring the impact of mangrove restoration on fisheries. In addition, the project is assessing the carbon stock of restored mangroves, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

“Our work is crucial for both environmental restoration and sustainable development in Ogoniland. By leveraging innovative techniques and international collaboration, we aim to create a long-lasting impact,” said Zabbey.

HYPREP’s participation in the Abu Dhabi conference reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to mangrove restoration and conservation, aligning with global efforts to enhance coastal ecosystems and mitigate climate change.
