A 21-year-old security guard, Mohammed Yunusa, admitted to stealing a bag of rice and maize from his employer, retired Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Ali Janja, citing hunger as his reason.
Why He Stole
Appearing before a Magistrates’ Court in Kubwa, Abuja, Yunusa pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy and theft, explaining:
“My boss, DIG Ali Janja, hired me as a security guard after the previous guard, Aminu Haruna, traveled in December. When my boss left for Kaduna, I was left with his children, who didn’t provide me with food. I stole a bag of rice and maize not to sell, but simply to eat.”
Yunusa revealed that he had already spent 19 days in police custody and pleaded for mercy from the court.
Court’s Verdict
The prosecution counsel, John Okpa, informed the court that the stolen items had been fully recovered, so no compensation was requested.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Oyepeju Mustapha sentenced Yunusa to two months of community service within the court premises. However, he was given the option to provide a guarantor—failure to do so would result in one month of imprisonment.
How the Theft Was Discovered
According to prosecutors, the case was reported by Jibrin Dauda, a police officer attached to DIG Janja, at the Dawaki Divisional Headquarters on January 12. Investigations revealed that Yunusa and Haruna had conspired to steal the bags of rice and maize, worth ₦500,000.
Legal Implications
The act violated Sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code, which address criminal conspiracy and theft.
