Former Nigerian Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has expressed heartfelt gratitude to ex-military president Ibrahim Babangida for restoring his rank and honour. Speaking at a book presentation by Babangida in Abuja on Thursday, Gowon acknowledged that Babangida played a pivotal role in clearing his name from treason charges.
Gowon, an elder statesman, also praised Babangida for their enduring friendship and his significant contributions to Nigeria’s development. He stated, “I had a very challenging time in government; I was even charged with treason. Later, President Shagari rescinded that order, and you (IBB) eventually restored my rank and honour. You did quite a lot for the country.”
The event also featured remarks from former President Goodluck Jonathan, who commended Babangida for documenting his experiences in a book. Jonathan emphasized the importance of such projects in enriching Nigeria’s historical records. “Documenting history strengthens and makes it more relevant. Today, you are helping us preserve our past for future generations,” Jonathan said.
Former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar also paid tribute to Babangida, describing him as a lifelong friend and brother. “My relationship with Ibrahim has lasted over 80 years. I want to thank you again for your friendship and brotherhood. We often reminisce about our past adventures, which always bring smiles to our faces. May these smiles continue in our twilight years,” Abubakar shared.
The high-profile event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, former Heads of State Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, among others.
This gathering not only celebrated Babangida’s literary contribution but also highlighted the enduring bonds and shared history among Nigeria’s former leaders. The book is expected to serve as a valuable resource for understanding Nigeria’s political and military history.
