Gospel actor ‘Baba Gbenro,’ dies at 65

Moses Are, popularly known as Baba Gbenro, was a deeply influential figure in Nigerian gospel cinema and theater. His death at 65 marks a significant loss to the gospel movie industry, particularly in the Mount Zion Faith Ministries’ community where he was a key figure. His work in the series Abbatoir endeared him to many fans, who appreciated both his acting and his commitment to using film as a platform for spiritual and moral instruction.

Baba Gbenro’s legacy extends beyond his acting career—he was also a respected producer and a visionary leader. As the founder and international president of Calvary Movies Drama Ministry, he played a pivotal role in shaping gospel film production in Nigeria. His leadership at Calvary Movies Television further cemented his place as a trailblazer in the gospel entertainment world.

His battle with liver disease and subsequent passing has left many fans, colleagues, and fellow ministers mourning, as seen in the heartfelt tribute by his colleague Oluwaseun Adejumobi, who announced his death on social media with the words: “Heaven’s Gain Again. General Has Gone to Rest.”

Baba Gbenro’s life and work reflected his deep faith and commitment to spreading the gospel message through drama and film. He was a dedicated family man, married to Bamike Are, and his contributions will continue to resonate with those who knew him and appreciated his work.

His death is a poignant reminder of the impact one individual can have on both the entertainment industry and the spiritual lives of others. May his soul rest in peace, and his legacy live on in the many lives he touched.
