In a significant move to support victims of the tragic Bodija explosion that occurred on January 16, 2024, the Oyo State Government has approved ₦4.5 billion in financial aid. The decision was reached during the Executive Council meeting held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the approved funds are in addition to over ₦200 million already spent by the government on emergency relief efforts. These include accommodation, feeding, hospital care, and security services provided in the aftermath of the incident.
Government Actions and Property Revocation
The State Executive Council also accepted the recommendation of a 10-man investigative committee to revoke the titles of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue, the epicenter of the explosion. In place of these properties, the government plans to construct a memorial monument to honor the victims of the explosion and ensure public safety.
Clarifying Misconceptions and Combating Disinformation
The Council expressed strong disapproval over the spread of misinformation and misleading narratives by individuals claiming to represent local residents. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, justice, and the well-being of Oyo State citizens.
Support for Affected Residents and Legal Action
The Commissioner noted that some intended beneficiaries are currently embroiled in family-related disputes, which the 10-man committee is addressing carefully. The government has also pledged to assist property owners near the explosion site by enabling reconstruction efforts, guided by professional structural engineers hired by the state.
Furthermore, the Oyo State Ministry of Justice will ensure the prosecution of suspects currently arraigned in court. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend fugitives linked to the explosion.
Cabinet Reshuffle and Governance Goals
Addressing speculations about a cabinet reshuffle, the Governor of Oyo State clarified that the move is not aimed at dismissing current cabinet members but at boosting operational efficiency. He emphasized that any changes made are intended to sustain the administration’s momentum through 2027, mirroring the dedication shown since 2019.
The Governor assured citizens that no cabinet member would be removed unless they are found to be distracted or underperforming.
