Akwa Ibom State Governor Pledges Support for Nigeria Air Force Operational Base

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) in establishing an operational base within the state.

This assurance was given during a meeting with a delegation from the NAF, who visited the state to initiate the process of setting up the base. Governor Eno highlighted the state’s dedication to maintaining peace and security, emphasizing that the presence of the Air Force would bolster Akwa Ibom’s overall security framework.

While acknowledging the existing presence of the Army and Navy, the Governor noted that the NAF’s operations in the state were minimal. He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, for choosing Akwa Ibom as a site for the base.

Speaking during the visit, Air Commodore A. H. Idris, who led the delegation, requested the state government’s support in acquiring the Eket Airstrip for the proposed base. He explained that the base would function as a forward operating facility to enhance national security, safeguard territorial integrity, protect critical oil infrastructure, and promote the development of a thriving blue economy.

Other members of the NAF delegation included Air Commodore C. E. Illoh, Group Captain A. K. Oyong, Group Captain H. I. Eze, Group Captain M. Yahaya, Group Captain M. H. Akpan, Squadron Leader A. Abdulsalam, and Squadron Leader E. E. Francis.

In a related development, Governor Eno welcomed and congratulated newly inducted Nigerian Police Force cadets from Akwa Ibom State during a courtesy visit. He encouraged the cadets to remain exemplary ambassadors of the state.

This initiative underscores Akwa Ibom’s strategic commitment to enhancing security and fostering economic growth through collaboration with key national defense agencies.
