Akwa Ibom Automobile Assembly Plant Nears Completion, Set for May Inauguration

The Akwa Ibom Automobile Assembly Plant in Itu Local Government Area is 99% completed and ready for commissioning, according to the Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Sea Port, Akan Okon. Addressing journalists in Uyo, Okon dispelled misinformation about the project, affirming that the plant is on schedule for its May inauguration.

Joint Venture for Economic Growth

The assembly plant is a joint venture between the Akwa Ibom State Government, an Israeli firm, and other investors. Okon emphasized that all necessary components for the plant’s operations are in place.

Assembly vs. Manufacturing: Key Distinctions

Okon clarified the difference between a vehicle assembly plant and a manufacturing plant, noting public confusion:
“An assembly plant receives Completely Knocked Down (CKD) and Semi Knocked Down (SKD) components and assembles them into vehicles. Unlike manufacturing plants, which require extensive robotics and heavy machinery, the assembly process primarily involves cranes and basic equipment,” he explained.

The components for the plant will be shipped from Israel, with most preparatory work already completed abroad.

Skill Acquisition and Workforce Training

Okon reiterated the state government’s plan to send trainees to Israel to acquire skills in vehicle assembly, enabling them to train local artisans. He attributed delays in the training program to COVID-19 lockdowns in Israel but assured that the initiative remains on track.

Commitment to Industrialization and Job Creation

Governor Udom Emmanuel remains committed to completing and commissioning the plant on schedule as part of his administration’s broader industrialization agenda. Okon highlighted the governor’s efforts to create jobs and tackle unemployment in Akwa Ibom State, stressing that no effort will be spared in achieving these goals.
