Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has dismissed reports of an agreement to serve as Vice President to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 elections. Speaking in Abuja, Obi emphasized that his political engagement is driven by the need to end bad governance, not by any quest for political positions.
Reacting to claims that he had agreed to a single-term power-sharing deal with Atiku, Obi clarified that his priority is a coalition to combat poverty, corruption, and poor governance, not a personal political ambition.
“I’m in a coalition against hunger, poverty, and ill health — politics for me is not about positions but about doing what is right for the people,” Obi said.
The comments were made at an event where Obi donated ₦20 million to education and healthcare projects by the Anglican Church in Kubwa, Abuja, emphasizing that investment in human capital is the key to Nigeria’s development.
Obidient Movement Debunks 2027 VP Rumor
The Obidient Movement, in a statement by its Director of Strategic Communications, Nana Kazaure, rejected the alleged pact, labeling it as baseless speculation.
“There is no truth to the claim that Mr. Obi has accepted a VP position in any coalition. Our principal’s mission is to fight bad governance and promote national development, not political trading,” Kazaure stated.
She urged the public to avoid sensationalism and focus on supporting leaders committed to real change.
Coalition Talks with Opposition Leaders Underway
Despite denials of specific arrangements, insiders confirm that talks are ongoing among top opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Atiku’s media adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, acknowledged progress in coalition discussions but said power-sharing and platform details were still under wraps.
“What I can confirm is that a viable coalition is being developed. The specifics are still being finalized,” Ibe said.
PDP: Coalition Could Defeat APC by 1PM on Election Day
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence that a strong alliance of opposition leaders could decisively defeat President Bola Tinubu and the APC.
PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, emphasized that public frustration, economic hardship, and insecurity make the current administration vulnerable in 2027.
“With Atiku, Obi, and El-Rufai aligned, we can end the election by 1PM. The people are tired of hunger, insecurity, and misrule,” he said.
ADC Restructures to Support Opposition Alliance
Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is being considered as a platform for the coalition, is making constitutional amendments to accommodate new members and leadership.
ADC National Chairman, Chief Ralph Nwosu, announced his decision to step down, paving the way for new leadership to help drive the coalition forward.
“We’re opening our platform for broader participation. New entrants will now have full rights immediately upon joining,” Nwosu explained.
